Yorkville Boy Scouts participate in area Memorial Day events

This past Memorial Day, May 31, more than 20 Scouts and adult leaders from Yorkville Boy Scouts of America (BSA) Troop 40 had the privilege of participating in numerous ceremonies to remember local veterans who made the ultimate sacrifice for our country.

After starting at Yorkville American Legion Post 489, the Troop’s charter organization, the Scouts along with American Legion Riders Post 489 conducted memorial ceremonies at the following Yorkville-area cemeteries: Cross Lutheran Church, Immanuel Lutheran Church, Pavilion Cemetery, St Patrick’s Catholic, Oak Grove, and Elmwood Cemetery. These observances were open to the public and saw many individuals and families turn out to remember their loved ones.

The morning of service concluded with the annual Memorial Day event in Town Square Park that included remarks from Yorkville Mayor John Purcell and Yorkville American Legion Post 489 Commander Anthony Cella. Troop 40 Scouts posted and retired the colors, and two of the Troop’s Eagle Scouts rang the bell in memory of 64 Yorkville veterans as each of their names were read by Yorkville Superintendent of Recreation Shay Remus.
